Carmelite Convent
The discalced Carmelite nuns came to Croatia in 1939 at the request of Zagreb’s Archbishop Aloysius Stepinac who also conceived the idea of building a convent for the cloistered Carmelite nuns as a place of constant prayer.
Construction of a Carmelite convent for refugee nuns from regions affected by war began in 1995 at the foot of Calvary hill.
The nuns moved into the convent just before the beatification of Cardinal Stepinac and participated with their prayer and song in the magnificent ceremony. The foundation stone for the Carmel of the Bistrica Mother of God and the blessed Aloysius Stepinac was consecrated on 11 September 1994 by Pope John Paul II. The Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanić visited the Church and consecrated the Carmel on 12 February 2000, and the Carmelite nuns retreated into cloister on the same day.
